New Sensor Tech for Life-Saving Innovation

The placement of Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) is a common medical procedure, but post-removal bleeding poses a significant risk for patients. Existing monitoring methods lack the sensitivity and reliability needed to prevent life-threatening complications. BWard, developed in collaboration with Changi General Hospital in Singapore, aims to address this critical need with an innovative sensor fusion solution.

BWard utilizes a sophisticated multi-sensor approach for highly accurate blood detection. It employs spectrophotometry to target hemoglobin's unique light absorption properties. To combat false positives, conductivity sensing and near-infrared characterization were integrated, creating a system that reliably differentiates even trace amounts of blood from other body fluids.

BWard's system architecture includes wireless charging, Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi connectivity, integrated alarms, and considerations for sterilization and disposables to ensure compatibility with hospital settings.

BWard achieved 100% detection accuracy (even with minimal blood) in early trials, demonstrating its potential for timely intervention. The project's scientific contributions led to peer-reviewed publications at respected conferences (CIS, RAM). BWard also gained substantial media attention, public recognition at healthcare exhibitions and was acknowledged by Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam.

BWard has global relevance, addressing a major need in the millions of CVC procedures performed annually. Its potential to improve patient safety underscores the value of automated, continuous monitoring. The technology has been patented, and development continues as BWard undergoes clinical trials at Changi General Hospital in Singapore.
