Creating Educational Equality Through Collaborative Action
Socioeconomic disparities in New Zealand and globally rob children of the chance to reach their full potential. Traditional fundraising methods are insufficient and not targeted. This inequity limits educational opportunities beyond the standard curriculum, with lifelong consequences that perpetuate cycles of disadvantage. Linked Horizons aims to break this cycle and create a more equitable future.
Linked Horizons is an online marketplace connecting low-decile schools with donors. Instead of general donations, benefactors support specific, school-curated campaigns that are meaningful and holistic.
Linked Horizons goes beyond simply providing resources. It fosters greater understanding between schools and benefactors through targeted campaigns. The sponsorship of the Panmure Bridge School robotics team, which included funding and mentorship, demonstrates the project's potential to unlock student potential. Furthermore, Linked Horizons addresses systemic inequities by promoting collaboration across sectors. Its success has achieved support from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, the Ministry of Education, 12 schools in the Manaiakalani Kahui Ako trust, and top entrepreneurship programs like Velocity
The educational challenges addressed by Linked Horizons have global relevance. The model's focus on targeted support and local engagement could be adapted to address disparities in other countries, including the US. Linked Horizons demonstrates the power of community-driven solutions to create positive change and work towards a more equitable future.
